For more than 20 years I have conducted research in the prevention of childhood obesity and have served as the Principal Investigator of the longitudinal NHLBI Growth and Health Study as well as the 5-state Fit WIC Child Obesity Intervention Study. I co-authored Obesity: Dietary & Developmental Influences (CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL, 2006). I am currently leading studies evaluating the impact of legislation to improve the foods in California schools, examining implementation of school wellness policies, and evaluating the impact of large scale community interventions to create healthy food and activity environments for children. I serve on a number of advisory boards including the California Legislative Task Force on Diabetes & Obesity and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies’ Standing Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention. My research explores how environmental, family, clinical and policy approaches can address the childhood obesity epidemic in California communities around the country.
