Kate Brown

I'm from:
The Woodlands, TX
What brought me here:
My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer while I was in high school and I became interested in the links between environment (especially nutrition), metabolism, and health. My honours project at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec (Biology Honours) dealt with folic acid metabolism, genetically induced folic acid deficiency, dietary supplementation, and their effects on placental development in mice.
Current stage in program:
6th year. Ph.D. Candidate. Working on finishing my dissertation onĀ  mechanisms behind the effects and benefits of caloric restriction, and hematopoietic stem cell aging and function.

Outside of lab I love:
cooking, hiking, or anything to enjoy the California outdoors, and having inspiring conversations with the other graduate students I live with in the BSC co-op. Going out for a drink with friends is also nice...
