Dr. Valdearcos received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Valladolid in Spain. He then completed his post-doctoral training in Dr. Koliwad’s lab at UCSF. Since July 2024, Dr. Valdearcos has been a principal investigator leading his own laboratory in the Diabetes Center at UCSF.
Dr. Valdearcos has a long-standing interest in understanding the role of microglia in the hypothalamic regulation of energy and glucose homeostasis. Microglia are emerging as critical regulators of brain homeostasis and his laboratory is dedicated to unraveling the functional heterogeneity of microglia, exploring their regulation by nutritional and metabolic signals, and understanding their interactions with other glial cells and neurons in the control of metabolic function.
